Perplexity is not a chatbot you brainstorm with; it is an answer engine. You ask a question, it searches the live web, and it returns a synthesized answer with numbered citations you can click through to check. For any team whose work depends on current, verifiable information - competitive research, sourcing suppliers, checking a claim before you publish, market and pricing scans - it does one job unusually well: fast answers you can actually audit.

Who it is for

Teams that research, source, and fact-check as part of the daily job. Use Perplexity where a general assistant is weakest: anything that needs to be current and cited. Deep Research runs a longer multi-source investigation and returns a structured report, and Spaces let a team keep shared, reusable research threads with their own files and instructions. It complements ChatGPT Business and Claude rather than replacing them - those are better for drafting and reasoning, Perplexity is better for finding and verifying facts.

The real pricing math

Individual Pro is $20/mo, or $200/yr. Enterprise Pro, the plan for teams, is $40 per seat per month or $400 per seat per year (a roughly 17% annual discount), adding SSO, SCIM provisioning, role-based access, audit logging, SOC 2 Type II, and data isolation. Each Enterprise Pro seat gets roughly 400 Pro searches a week and about 50 Deep Research runs a month. Above that sit Max ($200/mo individual) and Enterprise Max ($325/seat/mo) for heavy power users most teams will never need. Eligible education and nonprofit buyers get Enterprise Pro at a reduced $30/seat/mo.

What they don’t tell you

On the individual Free, Pro, and Max plans, your searches are used to train Perplexity’s models by default. AI data retention is on out of the box; you have to open Settings > Privacy and toggle it off, and opting out only applies going forward. If your team is running client or business queries through individual Pro seats, that is business data feeding a training set until someone flips the switch. The contractual no-training guarantee - real data isolation - only comes with Enterprise Pro.

Two more. It is a specialist: excellent at the research-and-cite loop and mediocre as a do-everything assistant, so it is usually a second tool alongside a general one, not your only AI subscription. And citations make it easy to trust the output too quickly - the sources are shown so you can verify them, which only helps if you actually click through.

Who should skip it

Light users, and anyone who wants one tool to do everything. The free tier is capable enough that an occasional user may never need Pro, so test your real query volume before buying seats. And if nobody on the team researches or fact-checks regularly, a general assistant already covers you.

Bottom line

For teams that research, source, and fact-check as part of the job, Perplexity earns a spot - the cited, current answers save real time and are defensible in a way a plain chatbot answer is not. Treat it as the research layer next to a general assistant rather than a replacement, start on the free tier to size your usage, and if you are routing business data through it, either turn off AI data retention on every individual seat or buy Enterprise Pro for the contractual isolation.
