Square review - the best all-in-one for in-person and local businesses

Square pairs free POS software with card processing, so a counter, market stall, or salon can take payments the same day. In-person is 2.6% + 15 cents on the free plan; the online rate quietly rose to 3.3% + 30 cents in 2026, and the fund-hold reputation is the real catch.

Square is the processor we point brick-and-mortar and local-service businesses to first, because it is not really a processor - it is a free point-of-sale system that happens to take cards. Download the app, tap a phone or a $59 reader, and you are selling the same afternoon with no monthly commitment. For a counter, that is the easiest yes in payments.

Who it is for

Cafes, salons, market vendors, trades, and any business where most sales happen face to face. Free POS, inventory, appointments, invoices, a basic online store, staff management, and a customer directory all live under one login, and the hardware (reader, stand, register, terminal) is genuinely plug-and-play. When the software is the point, that integrated stack is worth more than shaving a few basis points off the rate.

The real pricing math

On the free plan ($0/mo): 2.6% + 15 cents for in-person tap, dip, or swipe; 3.3% + 30 cents online; 3.5% + 15 cents for manually keyed cards; and 1% (minimum $1) for ACH invoice payments. Source: Square processing fees.

Two paid tiers buy down the rate: Plus at $49/mo per location drops in-person to 2.5% + 15 cents and online to 2.9% + 30 cents; Premium at $149/mo per location drops in-person to 2.4% + 15 cents. Source: Square plans and pricing. The monthly fee only pays for itself at real volume, so most small sellers stay on Free.

Be honest about one change: as of January 2026 Square raised the free-plan online rate from 2.9% + 30 cents to 3.3% + 30 cents. If your sales are mostly online, that increase makes Square meaningfully pricier than Stripe unless you pay for a plan. Square also processes Bitcoin payments at 0% through 2027 via its Cash App integration.

What they don’t tell you

The real catch is what happens to your money after the sale. Square is a flat-rate aggregator - it lets anyone start processing in minutes with no traditional underwriting - and it manages that risk on the back end with reserves and holds. Cross an internal risk line and Square can hold a slice of your card volume (commonly reported around 20% to 30%) for 90 to 180 days, or freeze the account outright while it reviews. The triggers are predictable: taking payment well before you deliver (deposits, retainers, prepaid packages), a sudden volume spike, or drifting past its 1% chargeback ratio. Search “Square account frozen” and you will find the receipts. Sources: Square reserves FAQ, funding-hold analysis. Keep a second processor live and do not run a business that cannot survive its cash sitting still for a quarter.

Second, cashing out fast costs. Standard next-business-day transfers are free, but instant and same-day transfers run 1.95% per transfer. Do that daily out of habit and you are handing back nearly a full point on top of the processing rate. Source: Square transfer options.

Who should skip it

Online-first stores. At the raised 3.3% + 30 cents free-plan online rate, Square is no longer competitive for e-commerce - route heavy online volume through Stripe instead. Multi-site operators should also do the math before committing: the $49 and $149 plan fees are per location, so they stack fast across several storefronts.

Bottom line

For in-person and local businesses that want one system rather than five, Square is the easiest yes in payments: free to start, same-day setup, hardware that just works. Leave transfers on the free standard schedule, keep your chargeback ratio clean and a backup processor live so a hold never stops you, and price the 3.3% online rate against Stripe before you route web sales here.
